r4, 40 keys from r5, had 2 ELs (both Skeletonic... weird huh?)

I haven't opened it very much, but my guildie just got a golem EL yesterday. I don't know his rank though :x

Thats a bad example. No one knows how many chests it takes to get to the center of a EL tonic, but you do know how long the string is and even if he guessed correctly, you wouldn't know how many more chests to open.

I'd say plan to open 500, you should get atleast 1 EL tonic from 500, plus a ton of extra stuff that can help you get closer to titles. Not to forget those contest winning item skins.

I also heard that if you have atleast one person in your party with you when you open the chest, you get better drops. I tried it and got a beetlejuice tonic and a max sun and moon shield from two zkeys. That was the first time I opened the chest and the person with me called me a lucky bastard cause he gets crap (creme's and fireworks)

I'm saving up 500 keys, getting someone in my party and opening them until my inventory is full. Dumping the loot in storage and repeating until all 500 are gone.

I don't even care about the EL tonics. I just want those cool skins without having to deal with fow/uw ory paying the very high prices.
